THE PETIT TRAIN
A race along the legendary Petit Train de La Mure railway
A century of coal and miners
Since 1888, the Petit Train de La Mure carried coal from the Matheysine plateau down to Grenoble. Moreover, it carried the miners and everyone who worked around the mines.
After a century of service, the line opened to tourists in 1988. But a landslide on a suspended section stopped traffic in October 2010. Thus, it ended 122 years of operation.
The TPM celebrates this heritage
Since its creation, the TPM has showcased this railway, a pillar of the Matheysine historical and cultural heritage. So, runners have crossed striking sections of the line during La Grande Course. Then the 3e Poste continued this tradition from 2017.
A race born with the train’s revival
In June 2017, the announcement that the Petit Train would reopen as a tourist attraction created a real buzz on the plateau. Indeed, the little red carriages were due to run again between Monteynard and La Mure from 2020. Then the health crisis pushed this return back to summer 2021.
Therefore, the TPM team created a new race in 2018 to celebrate the train’s restart. So, you start in Monteynard and finish in La Mure. You follow the railway line closely, but you also run some of its most remarkable sections.
