LE PETIT TRAIN – 30 km

The historic railway line of the Petit Train de La Mure was opened in 1888. It was used to transport coal to Grenoble from different mining areas of the Matheysin. It was also used to transport the miners and other people working in and around the mines.

After a century of service, this mythical railway line was adapted as a tourist attraction in 1988, until its closure in October 2010 due to a rockslide on the line. This ended 122 years of service!

Since its creation, the TPM has always highlighted this historic railway line, pillar of the Matheysin historical and cultural legacy. Participants have to run along important sections of this railway line during the Big Race 65km, then the 3e Poste since 2017.

In June 2017, the announcement of the project to revive Le Petit Train de La Mure as a tourist attraction, and the return of the little red wagons on the line between Monteynard and La Mure from 2020 (postponed to Summer 2021 due to the sanitary situation) created a magnificent excitement on the Matheysin plateau. Therefore, it is quite natural that the TPM organization joins this news by creating a new event in 2018 to celebrate in our way the restart of Le Petit Train de La Mure. This race will start in Monteynard and finish in La Mure, following the overall route of the railway line, and taking you along some remarkable sections of the line.

Trail race

You can find all the details of the route of the Petit Train 2023 by clicking on the link below:

The natural spaces we are working on and the people who are taking care of those lands and territories, which you will be crossing for the race, are factors we do not control 100%. Therefore, we sometimes have to make changes to our different routes, which can slightly modify the distance and/or the altitude difference. This distance and altitude difference is therefore given as an indication.
