Cancellation of the Ébron Trail

After a new review of the weather forecasts and in consultation with our emergency response system, we have made the decision to cancel the Ébron Trail.

Trail de l’Ébron — 16 km

Hello everyone,

After a new review of the weather forecasts and in consultation with our emergency response system, we have made the decision to cancel the Ébron Trail.

This decision is particularly difficult to make. For several days, our goal was to give ourselves the best possible chance of maintaining the event, while never taking the slightest risk for participants, volunteers, and emergency teams.

Unfortunately, the latest forecasts have significantly worsened and no longer allow us to consider holding the race under satisfactory safety conditions.

A deterioration now confirmed

The latest weather model outputs have worsened and now indicate a widespread thunderstorm risk throughout late Saturday afternoon and evening.

The weather bulletin states that a few storm cells may develop in the southeast of the country as early as the morning, before a gradual increase in thunderstorm activity throughout the day.

These storms may be strong and accompanied by hail, heavy rainfall, and strong wind gusts.

The intensity of the thunderstorm episode expected Saturday evening could be at least equivalent to what was observed Friday evening in Treffort.

Numerous lightning strikes were recorded over the Côte Rouge massif, accompanied by heavy rainfall, hail showers, and violent wind gusts.

In this context, maintaining an event taking place largely in forested areas and crossing the Ébron Himalayan footbridge was no longer compatible with our safety requirements.

Safety first

We understand the disappointment this announcement represents for all participants, especially those who had prepared for this event for several months or traveled a long distance to join us.

We fully share this disappointment.

Our thoughts also go to the hundreds of volunteers, municipalities, partners, and all the teams who have been mobilized for several days to prepare this event.

But our primary responsibility is to ensure everyone’s safety. Faced with a risk of strong, widespread storms likely to include lightning, hail, heavy rainfall, and strong wind gusts, no risk can be taken.

Postponing to the next day is not possible

The possibility of postponing the event to the next day was indeed considered by the organizers.

However, this solution is not feasible. The Treffort site will already host the Sunday events and does not have sufficient capacity to organize an additional race under good conditions.

Such a postponement would also require mobilizing a large number of volunteers, rescuers, marshals, and additional logistical resources.

The available staff unfortunately does not allow us to guarantee an adequate and sufficiently safe setup to add this event to Sunday’s program.

The high temperatures expected and the rapid arrival of the storm also prevent moving the race start earlier.

Next steps following this cancellation

Participants who are already present may still collect their race bib and participant gift at bib pickup today.

We will contact all participants by email as soon as possible to inform you of the procedures following this cancellation.

Thank you for your understanding

We sincerely thank you for your understanding, your trust, and your support.

This decision is difficult, but it is essential to ensure the safety of participants, volunteers, and all the teams involved.
